AndWeWereHungry is a literary and arts magazine. We have two goals: to publish good storytelling and to promote the work of our contributors. We strongly believe that short fiction has intrinsic value as a literary form and that it isn’t merely a stepping-stone to the novel. We expect and want a variety of perspectives to influence the work we publish on our Site and the direction we take as we grow. 

Call for Volunteer-Talent-At-Large

Staff Readers and Contributing Editors Panels

AndWeWereHungry is currently recruiting volunteer-talent-at-large to join our masthead either as Staff Readers or Contributing Editors. We seek careful readers who love the category for which they want to read/edit (short fiction, narrative nonfiction and poetry), and who can commit to reading a minimum of 25 pieces during the submission period. (Though at this time we do not know how many submissions we will get, and may revise this down the line.) 

PROCESS: Staff Readers will serve as the first line of review for the prose and poetry submitted to AndWeWereHungry. Contributing Editors will work closely with the editor-in-chief to select works for publication. Submissions are accessed and reviewed online via our third-party submission manager tool, Submittable. Staff Readers will be asked to read, vote and comment on the submissions within two weeks of the assignment. Submissions that reach a threshold of positive votes from the readers will then be assigned to our Contributing Editors, who will work closely with our editor-in-chief for final review and selection.

COMPENSATION: All Staff Readers and Contributing Editors are volunteers and will not be paid cash. Your donated time and energy helps ensure the growth and success of this independent labor-of-love project. All volunteer talent will be listed on the masthead. And once you are done with the submission and publication cycle, we will be happy to provide you with a great reference whenever you need one. 

TIME COMMITMENT: As we are a new venture we don't yet know what the necessary time commitment will be for our Staff Readers and Contributing Editors. We expect that each volunteer will be assigned small groups of submissions (5-15 submissions) on a twice-monthly basis, and that the workload will be relatively painless. As the whole process is both volunteer and virtual, you’re free to fit this in at the times that best work for you and to leave the position at any time. We ask only that you send us a courtesy note to let us know so that we may reassign your work in a timely process.

NOTIFICATION: We’ll aim to let you know whether we’ve selected you to join our team within four weeks of your application.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST: If selected for our team of volunteer-talent-at large, either as a Staff Reader or Contributing Editor, you are not permitted to submit work for consideration. Hence, if you wish to submit a piece to AndWeWereHungry's inaugural issue, you should not apply for a staff position. 

CONFIDENTIALITY: If selected for our team of volunteer-talent-at-large, we ask that respect the confidentiality of our submission process and refrain from discussing the content of the submissions you are reviewing with anyone or writing about it online or in print, (even if you don’t use names). We are building something wonderful, so let's show respect to the writers who are blessing us with their bounty. 

FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES: After our inaugural issue, we will be featuring more regular content on our homepage in a "Short Takes" features outside of our quarterly issues. Such submissions will be limited to short prose (flash fiction, short essays and reviews, etc.) and short poetry.
